The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, assured in a talk with the Center for Strategic and International Studies that the dictatorships of Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua are “failed models” that generate “humanitarian crises, rights crises and crimes against humanity” .

Secretary Almagro participated in a one-hour virtual conversation with Ryan C. Berg, Senior Fellow of the CSIS Américas Program. In it, he harshly criticized the dictatorships in the region for their “inability to resolve social, productive and economic issues.”
As leader of the OAS, he pointed out that his responsibility is “to attack the negative effects of dictatorships” and “to strengthen civil society that wants democracy in those countries.”
With regard to the institutions of nations with dictatorial regimes, the Uruguayan diplomat affirmed that the OAS must continue to “observe elections” and ensure the proper functioning of the rule of law.
He also called for the fight against corruption, organized crime and drug trafficking. “We are the most violent continent of all,” he said.
